Its not a lot of miles, but if you are going to do online searches anyways its a good way to keep your accounts alive if you are no longer actively using them.

Participating programs: American Airlines AAdvantage®, Frontier Airlines EarlyReturns®, Hawaiian Airlines® HawaiianMiles®, Icelandair Saga Club, IHG® Rewards Club, LifeMiles, My BestBuy™ Rewards, SVM FuelCircle, US Airways® Dividend Miles® and Virgin Atlantic Flying Club.

I am personally excited that I can keep my few Hawaiian miles alive from the one flight I took years and years ago. Also a good thing if you just need a few more miles to get to an award. Bing also has promotions to earn 10-20 points on some searches.

Hotel Review: Wyndham Apollo Amsterdam – Two Hotels in One.

Hotel Photos vs. Reality

Every frequent traveller knows that the photos that hotels show you are often far from reality. Marketing teams have gotten really good at their jobs and with a bit of Photoshop and Lightroom they can make light poles, wires and even whole buildings disappear. Or they can make tiny rooms look huge with wide angle lenses and smaller than normal furniture etc. Its gotten to the point where I almost never trust the stock photos provided by a hotel and go to review sites like Yelp or Tripadvisor to see what rooms and properties look like in reality.

Hotel Choice / Property Location

When I have a choice I usually try and stay at IHG properties (where I have Platinum Ambassador status) or Marriott properties (where I have gold status). However, during our winter trip to Amsterdam my wife was going to a conference so her company picked the hotel, which ended up in is staying at the Wyndham Apollo Amsterdam located in the Amsterdam-Zuid / Amsterdam-Oud-Zuid area. Its outside of the city center by around 10-15 minutes tram ride or 30-40 minute walk. Mostly a mixed residential and business  neighborhood it is right on an intersection of a few canals. Not great, but not bad either – just close to the conference center at the Okura Hotel.

The Wyndham is easy to find, but note that the entrance is not actually on the street that Google Maps lists it on and rather you need to walk around a large gym next door and through a small parking lot to get to the front entrance. Not a great design, but not the end of the world. This is pretty much where the positives ended.

Room Review

What do you get for over $200 USD a night? Look at the photo the hotel provides above? Pretty nice right? Now look at reality. The photos look better than it actually was. Most of the furniture was broken or had heavy wear marks. Room smelled moldy and the heater barely worked (not good for winter in AMS). There was a super loud knocking sound coming from the HVAC unit next door for which the staff said they could not fix. Don’t bother opening the window – the view was of a wall and HVAC unit.

Tiny room. With old furniture.

Bed looks nice, but lumpy and dirty.

DSC01158

“Modern” bathroom that had mold and leaked water from shower so that the whole toilet was soaking wet.

We had so many issues with this room. Water in the bathroom leaked from the shower and covered the entire toilet. There was black mold around the surfaces which indicated lack of cleaning. The room heater barely worked and there was super loud banging coming from the HVAC unit. The hotel confirmed the loud noises, but refused to do anything or move us to another room.

Why was it so bad? I later learned that there are really two hotels here. One is the very shitty one we stayed in. The other is the newly renovated tower that the hotel markets everywhere. There is no price difference, only a huge difference in how bad you stay will be. The major negative mark on the this hotel is the staff’s lack of professionalism or helpfulness. They had to have know about the problems with these older rooms but are more interested in hiding the facts to milk every last cent of profit.

Would I stay again? Hell no! There are so many choices in Amsterdam. This hotel is to be avoided at all costs unless you know you can stay in the newer tower.

Hotel Review: DoubleTree West Palm Beach

Palm Beach Florida is often overlooked as a vacation destination but the nightlife of Miami or the family-centered Orlando. When we mentioned to our friends that we were going to Palm Beach they almost all asked if we were looking for retirement homes 🙂 Strangely enough, even though its not a super popular destination the hotels in the Palm Beach area were rather expensive when we were looking to go in February. Lots of resorts like the famous Breakers or Four Seasons on the Island were over $400 a night! I guess snowbirds from up north were looking for warmer climates.

DoubleTree Cookie

Famous DoubleTree Cookie

Check-In

Usually I do not feel like I need to review hotel check-ins since they are all pretty standard affairs of going up to a counter, getting your key and going to your room. However, I stay at DoubleTree Hotels because they give out hot chocolate chip cookies! (and pricing etc). The first photo on this review shows the cookies, but doesn’t do justice to how delicious they were. Usually they are much better on cold days, but even the breezy but hot day in Palm Beach could not stop me from eating one right away.

King Bed Room – Top Floor

Comfy King Sized Bed

Fancy Couch

Fancy Couch

If a picture is really worth a thousand words I just posted 3,000 words worth of content! The room was fairly standard for what you expect to see in a mid-level business hotel. Decently sized with a king bed, two nightstands with lamps, seating area with fancy looking couch, coffee table and work table. Nice flat screen TV with good cable/sat channels (which we don’t use much while travelling since we like to see the sights). Overall the room was a bit dated, but clean and comfortable. There were a limited number of power outlets, which is a personal pet-peeve of mine so we had to move the bed a little bit.

The hotel location was in a office park right off a major road. It was set back you there was no road noise and made it very easy to drive to the major tourist destinations like the beaches etc. The staff said that the hotel was full, but we never saw more than 10 people around and the parking lot was pretty empty so that was a bit strange. Overall a decent hotel for only $145 a night (plus taxes and fees) on our corporate rate. I would go back again if I was in town for business, but might try and stay on a beach hotel next time.

Jetblue TrueBlue Mosaic Status Match and Challenge

Jetblue TrueBlue Mosaic Challenge

Jetblue TrueBlue Mosaic Challenge

Why I signed up!

Since I have both Southwest A-List Preferred and Companion Pass (see why the SW Companion Pass it THE BEST perk you can get on any U.S. Airline HERE) this is a no brainer. All I have to do is e-mail them proof of my status and I will have Jetblue Mosaic through the end of 2014. If I can meet the challenge, which is basically spend $1250 USD on Jetblue flights during the challenge period I will get it through 2015. Note: although Jetblue’s website says you earn 6x points for each $1 spent on Jetblue.com, only 3x points count towards your base points which qualify for this challenge.

Benefits of Mosaic Status ?

Of all the benefits below I think that the no change or cancellations fees is a huge benefit and makes Jetblue more like flying with Southwest. For reference most legacy airlines like United, American and Delta charge up to $200 to change or cancel a flight and that is often more than your ticket will cost. The extra 3 points per dollar is a nice perk as well. I don’t need Even More Speed as I have TSA Precheck, but it will be nice if PreCheck doesn’t apply to a flight.

The only disappointing thing is that you don’t get upgrades to Even More Legroom for free as you have to pay for those with $ or points, however on Jetblue a regular seat has 34 inches 34 inches of pitch (vs. typical of 31 in United, American and Delta) and their Even More Room is 38 inches (vs 35-36 on premium economy on United, American or Delta) so you are basically flying a premium seat anyways.

Dedicated Customer Support line doesn’t sound like a great perk, but trust me – it is a lifesaver when the shit hits the fan. During really bad weather and delays having a dedicated number and priority support is often the difference between being able to get on the next flight or getting stuck for days in a random city. Also you won’t lose all your hair getting the runaround from poorly trained customer service agents (knock on wood!).

San Francisco Bay Area to Oslo Direct Roundtrip for only $550

Oslo City View

Oslo Dreaming

Dreaming of going to Norway? Your choices from the San Francisco Bay Area are rather limited. Most legacy airlines (United, American, Delta) will gladly take you there for around $1500 and force you to make 2 stops. But this about to all change. Norwegian Airlines (http://www.norwegian.com/us/) is starting direct flights from Oakland to Oslo in late May 2014. Pretty nice to have a direct flight instead of 2 stops, but wait there’s more … they only cost around $550 right now!
